After nearly nine months of early contractor involvement, loads of workshops and many planning and design meetings, we finally got to blowdown Woodlands Bridge on the M3 as part of the Smart Motorway Project..
Although specifically excluded at the outset, we managed to persuade Highways England that the best, safest and most economical way to demolish this failing bridge was with the use of explosives. Consequently at approx 5:00am on the morning of the 19th November, the bridge succumbed to the detonation of approximately 85Kg of explosives. The charges removed the supporting piers and the heavily skewed bridge collapsed exactly as forecat. Once the easy bit was done, a total of ten machines from 23-50 tonnes in size broke up the remaining structrue and cleared everything away, handing back the road to the client three hours ahead of programme.
